Paper --Due Monday, March 17
The three-page typed paper should address the work of one of the following artists (or another with my approval):
Tim Hawkinson
Paul Pfeiffer
Maya Lin
Tom Friedman
Charles Ray
Ursula Von Rydingsvard
Damian Ortega
Katrin Siggurdardottir
Lee Bontecou
Donald Lipski
Devorah Sperber
Ruth Asawa
Tara Donovan
Andrea Zittell
Do Ho Suh
Olafur Eliasson
Clemens Weiss*
Mary Judge*
Carlton Newton*
Tony Cragg
Gego
* Names with an asterisk may have fewer publications about them—you may have to work mostly from web sources.
You should attempt to discuss the work of your artist in terms of issues discussed in this class, in slide lectures, videos, or the assigned reading. To get an A on the paper you will need to do more than basic research on the artist. You will need to synthesize what you have read in class and gleaned from the videos, and apply some of these new concepts to the artist’s work. I have absolutely no interest in reading a whole page about where the artist grew up and went to school; I want to know that you have a substantial understanding of (and interest in) the motivation behind your artist’s work and the processes he or she uses to realize the work. If the work doesn’t interest or inspire you, you have picked the wrong artist to write about.
You must cite your sources for the paper; proper bibliographical form can be found at this address:
http://www.liu.edu/cwis/cwp/library/workshop/citmla.htm
I expect you to use a combination of library books, art magazine reviews and web sources to write the paper. Twelve point font maximum, double spaced. I prefer Arial font. Please don’t start the paper one-third of the way down the first page.
